During the winter months when there's not much movement on those cold cold days, is a good time to stimulate the mind with good literature. The following is a great series of books to start with and two of my favorites!
Segu by Maryse Conde
In 1797, the Bambara people of Segu were powerful and progressive. They had a well established social, spiritual, economic and educational systems. They were balanced with nature and respected the words of the wise men among them the griots. But they were unaware of the changes that were surrounding them in the form of Islam and the Christian slave trade. The lifes of four brothers is the subject. There is Tiekoro, who renounces his people's religion and embraces Islam; Siga, who defends tradition, but becomes a merchant; Naba, who is kidnapped by slave traders; and Malobali, who becomes a mercenary and half hearted Christian. Based on actual events, Segu takes you to a time in history when the world of a people changed forever.
The Children of Segu by Maryse Conde
The epic continues into the next generation when souls fly home to Segu and forgotten ancestors weave the destinies of those they love together. The stories are both heartbreaking and empowering. The wives, lovers and children of Siga, Naba, Tiekoro and Malobali find there futures connected to the essence of their ancestors and live out the demons, truths and longings of who they are in their blood connection. Drinking from this cup of human nature will touch a place in you that we even experience today!
Although these may be out of print you can find them for as little as $0.75 on www.half.com or $0.01 on Amazon plus shipping. Enjoy!
